Crew 1 at Fontana Dam

Another great week for the Konnarock Trail Crew!! It was a week full of building new trail on large relocation projects.   

How many volunteers does it take to move one HUGE rock?!    

Crew 1 headed down to Fontana Dam for the second week this season to work on the relocation around the lake.  They put in some rock steps and log cribbing to support the trail, and finished up nearly 900 feet of new tread.

Crew 2 headed north to Pearisburg where they went to work on the New River Relocation.  They put in 50 rock steps and completed 300 feet of tread.  Great work!

Weeks 2 & 3

Taking a much needed break

Crew 2 headed down to Georgia for two weeks to work on the North of Rocky Mountain Rehab project.  They rehabilitated over 500 feet of trail and installed 85 rock steps and 11 log steps!  It was a busy two weeks, but with a great group of volunteers, they had a blast!

It's always fun working with the Georgia Appalachian Trail Club!  The crew got to do some exploring on their days off and then hit the Trail for their second week.

Meanwhile, Crew 1 was hard at work on two separate projects.  First, they headed down to the beautiful Smoky Mountains to work on the Fontana Lake Relocation.  The hand finished nearly 1900 ft of sidehill trail that was constructed by a track hoe.  They cleared major roots, cut the back slope and defined the outer edge of the trail -- GREAT WORK!

Week 3, Crew One headed up to work with the Tidewater Appalachian Trail Club on the Meadow Mountain Rehab project.  They finished up the project a day early and spent Monday covering several miles and helping to clean out waterbars and redefine tread -- AWESOME!

Week 1 - A Success!!

The Konnarock Crew is at it again!  Week one kicked off on May 10th, with both Crews 1 and 2 working in the beautiful Mt Rogers high country  in Grayson Highlands State Park with the Mt Rogers Appalachian Trail Club.  They put in 31 locust steps and two rock channels just south of the Quebec Branch Bridge, as well as rock steps on the AT and along the AT spur trail up from the Backpackers' parking lot. Thanks to the State Park staff for help with transporting all the locust!

The experiences of working together, learning new skills and backcountry living make an unbeatable combination of fun. No experience is necessary, but you must be 18 years or older. The Appalachian Trail Conservancy provides training, equipment, and room and board. Crews are transported in U.S. Forest Service vehicles from Sugar Grove to a primitive, backcountry tent camp near the project site.
